Dongeradeel was a municipality, which is like a local government area, in the northern part of the Netherlands. In 2019, it joined with two other municipalities, Ferwerderadiel and Kollumerland en Nieuwkruisland. Together, they formed a new, larger municipality called Noardeast-Fryslân.

History of Dongeradeel
Dongeradeel was created in 1984. It was formed by combining three older municipalities: Westdongeradeel, Oostdongeradeel, and Dokkum. This merger helped to organize the region into one larger administrative area.

- Nienke van Hichtum (1860–1939): She was a famous Dutch children's author from Nes. She wrote many popular books for young readers.
- Meindert DeJong (1906–1991): Born in Wierum, he later moved to America. He became a well-known writer of children's books and won important awards for his stories.
- Lou Dijkstra (1909–1964): A speed skater from Paesens, he competed for the Netherlands in the 1936 Winter Olympics.
- Theo Hiddema (born 1944): From Holwerd, he is a Dutch lawyer and a well-known politician.
