Club Career: Doni's Journey in Football
Playing for Roma in Italy

Doni joined the Italian club Roma in August 2005. At first, he didn't play much in the main team. He mostly played in UEFA Cup games. But after showing his skills in the Coppa Italia (Italy's main cup competition), he became the first-choice goalkeeper for Roma's league games.
He signed a new contract in 2006. In his second season with Roma, he became one of the best goalkeepers in the Italian league, called Serie A. He helped Roma win the Coppa Italia twice, in 2007 and 2008. They also finished second in Serie A in 2007 and 2008.
In April 2007, Roma played against Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League. Roma lost that game 7–1. Doni was injured when the two teams met again the next season.
In May 2008, his contract was extended until June 2012. However, in the 2008–09 season, Doni lost his starting spot to another goalkeeper after a tough loss to Juventus. He then spent some time recovering from an injury.
In the 2009–10 season, other goalkeepers played ahead of him. Doni returned to the starting team in February 2011 for a short time.
Time at Liverpool in England
Doni moved to the English club Liverpool in July 2011. He joined for free and was expected to be the second-choice goalkeeper, behind Pepe Reina.
Doni made his first league appearance for Liverpool in April 2012. In his next game, he received a red card and caused a penalty. This meant he missed the FA Cup semi-final. Doni played a total of four games in his first season at Liverpool.
In the summer of 2012, Doni had to return to Brazil for personal reasons. It was later shared that Doni had a serious health issue during a medical check. Doctors advised him to stop playing football because of his heart problems.
Returning to Botafogo and Retirement
On January 31, 2013, Doni joined Botafogo-SP in Brazil. This was the club where he started his career. On August 12, 2013, he officially retired from playing football because of his heart condition.
International Career: Playing for Brazil
Doni played for the Brazil national team for the first time in June 2007 against Turkey.
At the 2007 Copa América tournament, he became Brazil's main goalkeeper. He was a hero in the semi-finals against Uruguay, saving two penalties in a shootout. This helped Brazil reach the final. Brazil then won the tournament by beating Argentina 3–0.
He was considered for the 2008 Summer Olympics team but didn't make the final squad.
Doni missed the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup due to an injury. In November 2009, he was called up for friendly matches. Even though his club, Roma, didn't want him to go, Doni insisted on playing for Brazil. Because of his loyalty, he was kept in the national team for future games.
In May 2010, he was chosen for Brazil's squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
He retired from international football in February 2013 due to his heart problems.
