History of Doodlakine
Discovering the Area
The Doodlakine area was first explored by Europeans in 1864. They came to map the land and learn about it. The name "Doodlakine" comes from an Aboriginal word. It describes a unique rock formation found north of where the town is now.
How the Town Grew
In 1891, a spot was chosen for a new town. This place was near a good water source and on the road to the Yilgarn goldfields. The government officially declared it the Doodlakine townsite that same year.
Later, a railway line was built through the area. This line was about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) south of the original town. Because of the railway, the government decided to create a second part of the townsite along the tracks. This new area was officially declared in 1899.
In 1932, the Wheat Pool of Western Australia announced that Doodlakine would get two grain elevators. These large structures help store grain and were built at the railway siding. Each elevator was fitted with an engine to help move the grain.
Economy and Farming
The land around Doodlakine is mostly used for farming. Farmers in this area grow wheat and other cereal crops. The town is a very important place for collecting these crops. It serves as a receival site for Cooperative Bulk Handling, which is a company that helps farmers store and transport their grain.
Train Services
Doodlakine is a stop for two train services run by Transwa. These are the MerredinLink and Prospector trains. At least one of these services stops in Doodlakine every day, connecting the town to other places.
