Where is Doolbi?
Doolbi is located just east of the town of Childers. The main road, the Bruce Highway, runs along its southern side. Most of the land in Doolbi is used for farming. There are also some houses and the Isis Golf Course in the middle of the area. You won't find any big shops or businesses here.
A Look Back at Doolbi's History
The Sugar Mill Story
In 1890, the very first sugar cane crushing mill in the Isis area was built in Doolbi. This mill would crush sugar cane to make juice. This juice was then sent to a place called Yengarie to be turned into sugar.
By 1900, the Doolbi mill was made bigger so it could produce sugar itself. But as more sugar mills opened nearby, there wasn't enough sugar cane for all of them to make money. So, the Doolbi mill closed down in 1924. Today, you can still see an old brick chimney from the mill. It is in the south-western part of what is now the Isis Golf Course.
The Old School
A school called Horton State School first opened around 1888. In 1900, its name was changed to Doolbi State School. This school closed in 1953. The place where the school used to be, at 204 Goodwood Road, is now where the clubhouse of the Isis Golf Club stands.
