History of Dora
The first people to settle in the area that is now Dora arrived in the early 1830s. These early settlers included James M. Davis, Ezekiel Morgan, and Cole Smith. More families moved here later in the 1830s.
In 1886, the Kansas City, Memphis and Birmingham Railroad built a railway line through the settlement. They named their train station "Sharon". Soon after, coal companies like Magella Coal Company and Horse Creek Coal and Coke Company started operating. By 1890, the area was known as Horse Creek. It officially became a town in 1897.
By 1900, there were many coal mines nearby. The town also had a school, churches, businesses, and doctors. In 1906, the town's name was changed to Dora.
In 2023, Dora grew by adding a large piece of land that connected it to Interstate 22 at exit 78. This was a big step for Dora, as it was the first time the city had direct access to an interstate highway. New developments are now being built in this area.
According to the 2020 census, Dora had a population of 2,297 people. This was an increase from 2,024 people in 2010.
