Dorothy Walker Bush LeBlond Koch (born August 18, 1959) is an American author and a person who helps others through donations and volunteer work. She is the youngest of six children of the 41st president of the United States, George H. W. Bush, and First Lady Barbara Bush. Her older brother, George W. Bush, also became the 43rd U.S. president.
Early Life and Family
Dorothy Walker Bush was born on August 18, 1959, in Harris County, Texas. Her father, George H. W. Bush, later became the 41st President of the United States. Her mother, Barbara Bush, was the First Lady. Dorothy was named after her grandmother, Dorothy Walker Bush.
Her brother, George W. Bush, served as the 43rd president of the United States from 2001 to 2009. She has four other siblings: Pauline Robinson "Robin" Bush, who passed away in 1953; former Florida governor Jeb Bush; Neil Bush; and Marvin Bush. Since she was a child, Dorothy has spent her summers and holidays at the Bush compound. This is a family home located by the sea in Kennebunkport, Maine.
Dorothy attended Miss Porter's School. This is a private school for girls in Farmington, Connecticut. In 1982, she earned a degree in sociology from Boston College.
In 1975, Dorothy visited Beijing, China. During this trip, she became the first person to be publicly baptized in the People's Republic of China since 1949.
Career and Helping Others
Dorothy Bush Koch is known for organizing events and raising money for charities. These are groups that help people and do not aim to make a profit. She is a co-chair of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. She works on this foundation with her brother, Jeb Bush. This foundation helps families learn to read and write better. She also helped raise money for her brother George W. Bush's campaigns when he ran for president.
Dorothy is also an author. She wrote a book called My Father, My President: A Personal Account of the Life of George H. W. Bush. This book was published in 2006.
She also played a special role for the USS George H.W. Bush. This is a large United States Navy aircraft carrier. It was named after her father, who was a naval aviator in World War II. On January 10, 2009, she gave the first orders to the ship's crew in Norfolk, Virginia.
Personal Life
In 1982, Dorothy Bush married William Heekin LeBlond. They had two children together: Samuel Bush "Sam" LeBlond, born in 1984, and Nancy Ellis "Ellie" LeBlond, born in 1986. They later divorced in 1990.
In June 1992, she married Robert P. "Bobby" Koch. Their wedding took place at Camp David, a special retreat for U.S. presidents. Robert P. Koch works in Washington, D.C., representing the wine industry. They have two children: Robert David, born in 1993, and Georgia Gigi Grace, born in 1996.
