Dorothy Bailey Cline Custer (May 30, 1911 – April 22, 2015) was an amazing American woman. She was a comedian and played the harmonica. She lived to be almost 104 years old! Many people knew her from her two fun appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. She became very popular on a TV station's website in Idaho. She was also interviewed many times in Idaho and other states.
Who Was Dorothy Custer?
Dorothy was born in 1911 in a town called Hailey, Idaho. She grew up in a place called Rock Creek. Later, she went to the College of Idaho. In the early 1930s, she taught school in Murtaugh. In 1937, she married Marvin Custer. The couple moved to Twin Falls in 1939.
Her Amazing TV Appearances
Dorothy started performing for fun in 1916. She created 13 different characters for her comedy shows. She also played the harmonica since 1923. Music was a big part of her acts, even on The Tonight Show. Dorothy said she didn't become famous until her first time on The Tonight Show. This was in 2011, when she was 100 years old!
She was invited back to The Tonight Show in 2012. It was Valentine's Day. She sang "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" to the host, Jay Leno.
An Adventurous Spirit
Dorothy loved adventures, even when she was very old!
- In May 2012, she celebrated her 101st birthday. She went ziplining in the Snake River Canyon.
- In June 2013, she celebrated her 102nd birthday. She went BASE jumping off the Perrine Bridge! This was also into the Snake River Canyon. She became the oldest BASE jumper ever. A famous BASE jumper named Sean Chuma helped her.
Dorothy Custer passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 22, 2015. She was almost 104 years old.
