Dorothy Camille Shea is an American diplomat who works for the United States government. She is known for her important roles in foreign policy. Currently, she serves as the United States Deputy Representative to the United Nations. This means she helps represent the U.S. at the UN, an organization where countries work together.
Before this, she was the U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon from 2020 to 2023. As an ambassador, she was the main representative of the U.S. in Lebanon. In 2022, she received a special award called the Distinguished Presidential Rank Award for her excellent work.

Education and Early Career
Dorothy Shea studied at several universities. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia. Later, she received a Master of Science degree from Georgetown University. She also earned another Master of Science degree from the National War College. These studies helped her prepare for a career in diplomacy.
She is a very experienced member of the Senior Foreign Service. This is a group of professional diplomats who work for the U.S. government. She has worked in many different places around the world. For example, she served in Jerusalem and Tunisia. She also worked in Tel Aviv, Israel, and Cairo, Egypt. Her roles included helping with human rights and assisting refugees.
United States Ambassador to Lebanon
In 2019, President Trump chose Dorothy Shea to be the next U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon. This is a very important job. Her nomination was sent to the United States Senate for approval. The Senate needed to agree that she was the right person for the role.
A hearing was held where she answered questions from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. This committee reviews people chosen for foreign policy jobs. In early 2020, the Senate voted and confirmed her nomination. She officially became the Ambassador to Lebanon on March 11, 2020. She met with Lebanese President Michel Aoun to present her credentials.
Deputy UN Representative
In 2023, President Joe Biden nominated Dorothy Shea for another important role. He chose her to be the Deputy Representative of the United States to the United Nations. This position also has the rank of an Ambassador. It means she helps represent the U.S. in the UN's Security Council and at the General Assembly.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee held hearings on her nomination in June 2023. The committee approved her nomination. On August 1, 2024, the Senate voted to confirm her. This made her officially the Deputy UN Representative.
