The Double Decker is a super popular chocolate bar made by Cadbury in the United Kingdom. It first came out in 1976. Its name comes from the famous double-decker buses you see in London, and sometimes these buses even appeared in the ads! This yummy bar has a mix of creamy milk chocolate, soft nougat with a hint of coffee, and crunchy cereal pieces. It's a recipe that people love so much, they even use it in cakes!
What's Inside a Double Decker?
The Double Decker chocolate bar has two main layers. The top layer is a light and fluffy nougat, which is a sweet, chewy candy often made with sugar or honey, nuts, and egg whites. This nougat layer has a little bit of coffee flavor.
Below the nougat is a crunchy layer made of cereal 'crispies'. Both of these delicious layers are then covered in smooth milk chocolate. When the Double Decker first came out, it actually had raisins in the bottom layer! But in the mid-1980s, after asking what people liked, Cadbury decided to take the raisins out and change the recipe to what we know today.
In the 1970s, famous comedian Willie Rushton appeared in the TV ads for the Double Decker. Later, a fun mascot named Dougie the Double Decker Dog was introduced to represent the bar.
A regular Double Decker bar weighs about 54.5 grams. If you buy them in a multipack, they are a bit smaller, around 37.3 grams each. The Double Decker bar no longer contains hydrogenated oil, which is a type of fat. Today, these tasty bars are made in Poland.
Different Kinds of Double Decker
Over the years, Cadbury has tried out some fun variations of the Double Decker.
In 2004, they launched a version called Double Decker – Nuts. This bar was just like the original but had nuts mixed into the nougat layer. Its advertising slogan was "crispy, crunchy, chewy and nutty." This nutty version was eventually stopped, but it was quite popular for a while!
More recently, in August 2016, Cadbury introduced Dinky Deckers. These are mini versions of the Double Decker bar. They come in a 120-gram pouch bag, perfect for sharing or a small snack.
