History
Dougherty was first known as Henderson Flat. On September 3, 1887, a post office opened here. A post office is where you send and receive mail. The town was then named Dougherty. It got its new name from William Dougherty, a banker from Gainesville, Texas.
When it was first started, Henderson Flat (later Dougherty) was in a place called Pickens County, Chickasaw Nation. This was part of the Indian Territory, which was land set aside for Native American tribes.
Around 1900, Dougherty was a place where African Americans were not allowed to live. They could only visit during the day for business.
