History of Driftwood
The name "Driftwood" comes from a nearby stream called Driftwood Branch Sinnemahoning Creek. People started settling in this area way back in 1804. Later, in 1872, Driftwood officially became a borough.
Where is Driftwood?
Driftwood is found in the southern part of Cameron County. It sits right where two creeks, the Bennett Branch and the Driftwood Branch, join together to form Sinnemahoning Creek. This main creek then flows east into the West Branch Susquehanna River.
The town is located at the bottom of a deep valley, or gorge. This valley was carved out by the creeks over many years. It's about 1,200 feet deep!
Two main roads pass through Driftwood. Pennsylvania Route 120 follows the Driftwood Branch north for about 18 miles to Emporium, which is the main town in Cameron County. It also goes east for about 27 miles to Renovo. Pennsylvania Route 555 heads west from Driftwood for about 25 miles to Weedville.
The borough of Driftwood covers a total area of about 2.56 square miles (6.6 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water from the creeks.
