Discovering Droop Mountain

Droop Mountain rises 3,597 feet high. That's how tall it is above sea level. You can find it southwest of Hillsboro, West Virginia, along U.S. Route 219.

A Mountain's Role in History

During the Civil War, Droop Mountain was like a big wall. It made it hard for soldiers to travel north or south along the Greenbrier River. This meant it blocked troop movements.

On November 6, 1863, the Union Army launched a strong attack. They successfully pushed back the Confederate States Army defenders. This victory for the Union basically ended the Confederate resistance in West Virginia. It was a very important battle for the state.

Droop Mountain Today

Today, much of Droop Mountain is part of Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park. This park helps protect the historic Civil War battlefield. The mountain is also home to a small community called Droop, West Virginia.

How Droop Mountain Got Its Name

The mountain likely got its name because of its shape. Its outline looks like it is "drooping" or sloping downwards.
