A Look at Dualchi's History
Dualchi has a very long history, going back thousands of years. People lived here even during the Nuragic period, which was a time when ancient people built special stone towers called Nuraghes. You can still find some of these old structures in the area.
Dualchi in the Middle Ages
During the Middle Ages, Dualchi was part of an important kingdom called the Judicate of Torres. This kingdom was one of four independent states that ruled Sardinia. Dualchi was specifically in a smaller area known as the curatoria of Marghine.
Later, Dualchi came under the control of another powerful kingdom, the Judicate of Arborea. The Marghine area became part of Arborea's territory.
Changes in Control
The Arborean kingdom eventually fell in 1429. After this, Dualchi became part of the Aragonese marquisate of Oristano. This was a time when the Aragonese, from what is now Spain, had a lot of influence in Sardinia.
In 1478, there was a big war between the Marquis of Oristano, named Leonardo Alagon, and the Aragonese viceroy. The people of Dualchi supported the Marquis and fought against the Aragonese. However, they were defeated in the end.
After the war, Dualchi officially came under Aragonese rule. It became a "fief," which meant it was like a piece of land owned by a lord, who then allowed people to live and work there in exchange for loyalty or service.
End of the Feudal System
In the 18th century, Dualchi became part of the marquisate of Marghine, which was owned by a family called the Pimentel. Later, it passed to another family, the Tellez-Giron.
Finally, in 1839, a big change happened: the feudal system was abolished. This meant that towns like Dualchi were no longer owned by lords. The people of Dualchi were able to buy their freedom from the Tellez-Giron family, and the town became independent.
