Life as an Archduchess
Elisabeth Wilhelmine Luise was born on April 21, 1767. Her birthplace was Treptow an der Rega, which is now in Poland. Her parents were Frederick II Eugene, Duke of Württemberg and Princess Friederike of Brandenburg-Schwedt. She was their eighth child.
Moving to Vienna
When Elisabeth was fifteen, Emperor Joseph II asked her to come to Vienna. There, she studied in a convent. She also changed her religion to Roman Catholicism. This was to prepare her for marriage.
Marriage and Family Life
Elisabeth married Archduke Francis of Austria on January 6, 1788. Francis was Emperor Joseph's nephew. At this time, Emperor Joseph was not well. Elisabeth became very close to him. Her youthful charm made his last years brighter.
Elisabeth's Final Days
In late 1789, Elisabeth became pregnant. Her health was very delicate. On February 15, 1790, she attended a religious ceremony for the dying emperor. After this, Elisabeth felt unwell. On the night of February 18, she gave birth early to a daughter. The baby was named Archduchess Ludovika Elisabeth. Sadly, Elisabeth did not survive the birth. She was buried in the Imperial Crypt. Emperor Joseph II died just two days later.
Her Child
Elisabeth had one daughter:
- Archduchess Ludovika Elisabeth of Austria (born February 18, 1790 – died June 24, 1791). She passed away when she was very young.
Historical Records
Elisabeth's letters to her parents are kept in the State Archive of Stuttgart in Germany. These letters were written between 1780 and 1790. Her letters to her brother, Charles Frederick Henry of Württemberg, are also stored there.
