History of Carlisle
Early Settlements: Liberty and Dudley
A man named Jeremiah "Uncle Jerry" Church was one of the first people to settle in Iowa. He arrived in Fort Des Moines in 1845. He wanted to create new towns.
In the winter of 1845, he planned a town in Polk County called Dudley. It was just north of the Warren County border. This was his second try at planning a town. His first attempt was named Liberty, but he had to give up on it. The land he chose for Liberty turned out to be school property.
Church had big plans for Dudley. He hoped it would become as important as Des Moines. He even ran a ferry to the area himself. He also asked state officials to consider Dudley as the main town, or "county seat," for Polk County.
However, Dudley did not last long. It was destroyed by a big flood in 1851. The officials had already noted that the town was built on low ground.
The Founding of Carlisle
After Dudley was destroyed, Jeremiah Church tried again. He founded Carlisle in 1851 with David Moore. This new town was also in Polk County. It was about 2 miles (3.2 km) southwest of where Dudley used to be.
In 1852, the county borders changed. This moved Carlisle into Warren County. It became part of Allen Township.
Jeremiah Church was the first merchant, or shop owner, in Dudley. The first merchant in Carlisle was Abraham Shoemaker. Other important "firsts" in Carlisle include:
- Robert Nicholson, the first mayor.
- Albert Petrie, the first child born in the town.
- William Buxton, who built the first flour mill.
- Jackson Shoemaker and Ellen Compton, the first couple to get married.
- Elias Compton, the first person to die there (in 1851).
Carlisle was named after Carlisle, Pennsylvania. It officially became a city in May 1870. The town grew a lot in 1871 when a railroad was built through it. The main business area moved from a hill down to the valley near the railway. The hill then became a place mostly for homes and churches.
William Buxton's flour mill was called the Carlisle Flouring Mills. It started in 1854. The mill building was finished in 1856. It cost about $10,500 at that time. Robert Nicholson bought the mill in 1863. He made it bigger in 1874, adding more grinding machines. By then, it had cost about $16,000.
Carlisle's first schoolhouse was built in 1853. It cost $393 to build. This building was used as a school until 1869 or 1870. A new, two-story school was built to replace it. The old schoolhouse later became a private home.
"Uncle Jerry" Church lived in Carlisle until he passed away in November 1874.
By 1879, Carlisle had about 500 people. It had four churches and many businesses. These included general stores, grocery stores, drug stores, and doctors. There was also a blacksmith, a wagon maker, a hotel, and a meat market.
