Dudleya abramsii is a type of succulent plant often called Abrams' liveforever. Succulents are plants that store water in their leaves or stems, like cacti. The name abramsii honors LeRoy Abrams, a famous botanist.
This plant naturally grows in California and northern Baja California. You can usually find it in rocky places.
What is Abrams' Liveforever?
Abrams' liveforever is a plant that lives for many years. It forms a small group of leaves at its base. These leaves are thick and waxy. They can be triangular or pointed. They usually grow up to 11 centimeters long, but many stay much smaller. The whole plant is often only a few centimeters wide.
Flowers and Stems
The plant grows a stem that stands upright and branches out. This stem can have up to 15 flowers. The flowers are pale yellow and about one centimeter long. Each flower has five small, thick leaf-like parts called sepals at its base. It also has five petals.
Different Kinds of Abrams' Liveforever
There are several types, or subspecies, of Dudleya abramsii. Each one grows in slightly different areas:
- Dudleya abramsii subsp. abramsii: This type is found in the Peninsular Ranges of California and Baja California.
- Dudleya abramsii subsp. affinis (San Bernardino Mountains liveforever): This type only grows in the San Bernardino Mountains near the Mojave Desert.
- Dudleya abramsii subsp. bettinae (San Luis Obispo serpentine dudleya): This type is only found in the coastal serpentine soil areas of San Luis Obispo County, California.
- Dudleya abramsii subsp. murina (San Luis Obispo or mouse-leaved dudleya): This type also only grows in coastal San Luis Obispo County.
- Dudleya abramsii subsp. parva (Conejo dudleya): This type is only found in the Santa Monica Mountains of Ventura County, California. It is considered a threatened species, meaning it needs protection to survive.
