Dukedom is a small community that isn't officially a city. It sits right on the border between Kentucky and Tennessee in the western part of both states. This means parts of Dukedom are in Graves County, Kentucky, and other parts are in Weakley County, Tennessee.

The community is about 487 feet (148 meters) above sea level. It's also known for being the home of the Knob Creek Church of Christ. This church was started in June 1834. It was the first church in the Restoration Movement to use the name "Church of Christ."

When Was Dukedom Established?

Dukedom got its first post office in 1833. This post office was located on the Tennessee side of the community. It's believed that Dukedom was named after Duke A. Beadles. He was the very first postmaster in the area.

Dukedom During the Civil War

Dukedom has a connection to the Civil War. A famous general named Nathan Bedford Forrest visited the area. He was a general for the Confederacy.

A special historical marker in Dukedom tells part of this story:

  • General Forrest and his cavalry (soldiers on horseback) passed through Dukedom. This happened before and after a military action in Paducah on March 25, 1864.
  • When they returned, Kentucky soldiers camping nearby were allowed to find food, horses, and new recruits. They also visited their families.
  • The marker notes that none of these soldiers left the army.
  • Later, on April 14, General Forrest sent his men back through Dukedom. They were looking for horses they had missed before.
