History of Dulzura
The name Dulzura comes from the Spanish word dulce, which means 'sweet'. Dulzura is another way to say something is sweet or pleasant.
Why the Name "Sweetness"?
One idea is that the name came from the honey industry. This industry was very successful in the area around 1869. The warm, dry weather and mild winters made the area seem 'sweet' and 'gentle'.
Famous Local Treats
Dulzura was once known for a special sweet treat. It was called Clark's 'Pickelized' Figs. These were a type of candied fruit. Frank and Lila Clark made them on Clark Ranch from 1908 to 1914.
The figs were sold in small wooden barrels. You could find them in grocery stores all over the United States. However, World War I caused a shortage of sugar. This made the family business stop.
Today, the Clark Ranch is still owned by the family. Their old "Pickle House" is now a tasting room for Dulzura Vineyard & Winery.
The Old Schoolhouse
The Dulzura Schoolhouse was a one-room school. It was an important building in the community. It taught children from the 1900s until it closed in the 1950s.

Dulzura has a type of weather called a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. This means it has hot, dry summers. The winters are mild and wet. This climate is often called "Csa" on climate maps.
