Dumaagiin Sodnom (Mongolian: Думаагийн Содном; born July 14, 1933) is an important political figure from Mongolia. He served as the Prime Minister of Mongolia from 1984 to 1990. During his time, he helped lead the country through a period of change.
Biography
Early Life and Education
Dumaagiin Sodnom was born on July 14, 1933. His birthplace was the Örgön District of Dornogovi Province, Mongolia. He went to school in the Bayanmönkh district of Khentii Province. Later, he studied at the Finance and Economic Technical College in Ulaanbaatar from 1946 to 1950. After college, he worked as an accountant at the Ministry of Finance for four years. In 1954, he joined the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP). He then continued his studies, learning economics in Irkutsk from 1954 to 1958.
Rising in Government
After his studies, Sodnom began to work his way up in the Mongolian government. He started in the Finance Ministry. In 1963, he became the Minister of Finance. He held this important position until 1969. From 1969 to 1972, he served as the first deputy chairman of the State Planning Commission. He was then promoted to chairman of the State Planning Commission in 1972. In 1974, he became the deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers. This was another significant step in his career.
As Prime Minister
On December 12, 1984, Dumaagiin Sodnom was appointed chairman of the Council of Ministers. This role is similar to a prime minister. At the same time, he was also chosen to be a member of the MPRP Politburo. The Politburo was a powerful group that made key decisions. His appointment came after a change in leadership, with Jambyn Batmönkh becoming the head of the People's Great Hural. Sodnom held both his positions until March 21, 1990. At that time, the government and Politburo resigned. This happened during a period of public demonstrations and calls for change in Mongolia.
Later Career
After leaving his role as Prime Minister, Sodnom continued to contribute to Mongolia. From 1990 to 2001, he served as the director of the Mongolian Gazryn Tos petroleum company. In 1992, he was also appointed as an aide to Prime Minister Puntsagiin Jasrai.
