Sharavyn Gungaadorj (Шаравын Гунгаадорж), born on May 2, 1935, is a well-known politician from Mongolia. He was the 14th Prime Minister of Mongolia (also called the Chairman of the Council of Ministers) from March 21 to September 11, 1990.
Sharavyn Gungaadorj's Early Life and Career
Gungaadorj was born in 1935 in a place called Ikhkhet sum, located in Dornogovi Province. He studied at the Russian State Agricultural University in Moscow and finished his studies in 1959.
After his graduation, he held several important positions in the government. From 1967 to 1968, he worked with the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party. Later, he became the deputy minister of agriculture.
In 1980, he was made the first deputy minister for state farms. The next year, in 1981, he became the first secretary of the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party Committee in Selenge Province. By 1986, he was appointed as the minister of agriculture.
Becoming Prime Minister
Before he became Prime Minister, Gungaadorj was a member of the State Great Khural, which is Mongolia's parliament. He represented the Selenge Province. He also worked as an advisor to the President of Mongolia.
From 1987 until March 21, 1990, he was both the deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers and the minister of agriculture and food industry. In March 1990, there were big demonstrations against the government. Because of this, the Prime Minister at the time, Dumaagiin Sodnom, and other leaders resigned.
On March 21, 1990, Sharavyn Gungaadorj became the Chairman of the Council of Ministers, which is like being the Prime Minister. He led an interim government until the first free elections could be held later that year in September.
After His Time as Prime Minister
After his time as Prime Minister, Gungaadorj continued to serve his country. In 1992, he became Mongolia's ambassador to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Later, he also served as ambassador to Kazakhstan.
He returned to parliament as a member from 2000 to 2004. During this time, he was also the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Environment and Rural Development. He did not run for parliament in the 2004 elections. In 2009, he worked as an advisor to the Minister of Environment and Tourism.
Gungaadorj has a PhD in agricultural sciences. He is also a member of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences. He is married and has three children. Since 1997, he has been the managing director of a company called "Agropro" corporation.
