The Story of Dumbleyung

How Dumbleyung Got Its Name

The name Dumbleyung comes from the Noongar language. It might mean 'large lake' or 'inland sea'. Explorers Henry Landor and Henry Maxwell Lefroy found the nearby lake in 1843. They named it Dambeling Lake. Surveyors started using the spelling 'Dumbleyung' in the 1860s.

Early Settlers Arrive

People who raised sheep and cut sandalwood trees moved into the area. The first three families to settle were the Cronin, Kersley, and Bartram families. They started living near Lake Dumbleyung.

In 1875, George Kersley, Sr. got the first grazing leases. The Cronin family arrived in 1878. Henry Bartram settled his family in 1886.

Dumbleyung Becomes a Town

In 1907, Dumbleyung was officially made a town. A railway line from Wagin ended here. This helped the town grow.

By 1915, Dumbleyung was an important service town. It provided many things for people in the area.
