Dunbar is a small town, also known as a borough, located in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,013 people lived there. This number was a bit lower than the 1,042 people counted in 2010.
History of Dunbar
Dunbar got its name from a military leader named Colonel Thomas Dunbar. He was in charge of an English army group. This group was involved in a battle near a place called Jumonville. After another British general, Edward Braddock, was defeated by French and Native American forces, Colonel Dunbar's troops went back to Philadelphia.
The town of Dunbar was first planned out in 1857. It officially became a borough on June 26, 1883.
Geography of Dunbar
Dunbar is located in the northern part of Fayette County. It sits in a valley where Dunbar Creek flows. This creek eventually joins the Youghiogheny River.
The town is about 5 miles (8 km) south of Connellsville. You can get there by following Woodvale Street and U.S. Route 119. Uniontown, which is the main city of the county, is about 8 miles (13 km) to the southwest.
According to official records, Dunbar covers a total area of about 0.58 square miles (1.50 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
