Duncan Frederick Vines was an English cricketer and a brave officer in the Royal Indian Navy. He was born in 1869 in Agra, which was part of British India at the time. He lived a long life, passing away in 1950 in England.

Duncan Vines: A Life of Cricket and Service

Duncan Vines was known for two main things: playing first-class cricket and serving in the navy. First-class cricket is the highest level of the sport played over several days. The Royal Indian Navy was the naval force that protected British India.

Early Life and Navy Beginnings

Vines was born in India. As he grew up, he joined the Royal Indian Navy. This was a very important job, helping to keep the seas safe.

Cricket Adventures

While serving in India, Vines also played cricket. He made his first-class debut in August 1897. He played for a team called the Europeans. Their opponents were the Parsees in Bombay.

A couple of years later, in 1899, he played cricket in Wales. He joined the Monmouthshire team. He played four matches for them. He even played one more game for Monmouthshire in 1901.

After his time in Wales, his navy duties took him back to British India. There, he played two more first-class matches for the Europeans in September 1908. He played against the Parsees again, and also against the Hindus.

Vines' Batting Record

Across all his first-class matches, Duncan Vines batted six times. He scored a total of 38 runs. His highest score in a single game was 21 runs.

A Decorated Navy Officer

Vines continued his career in the Royal Indian Navy. By June 1918, he had reached the rank of Captain. He worked as a port officer in Calcutta. This meant he was in charge of the port, making sure ships and trade ran smoothly.

For his excellent service, he received a special honor. He was made a CBE in 1918. CBE stands for Commander of the Order of the British Empire. It's a high award given for great achievements.

Retirement and Later Years

Captain Vines retired from the navy in March 1935. He had served his country for many years. He passed away in March 1950 in Tunbridge Wells, England, at the age of 80 or 81.
