Petrel Base: A Scientific Home
The Petrel Base is a special place on Dundee Island. It is a scientific station that belongs to Argentina. Scientists and researchers live and work here. They study the unique environment of Antarctica.
The base is located on rocks, about 18 meters (60 feet) above sea level. It sits at the foot of the Rosamaría glacier. The coordinates for Petrel Base are 63°28′S 56°17′W.
The Petrel Base is quite large. It has 3600 square meters (about 38,750 square feet) of covered buildings. There is also a 1200 square meter (about 12,900 square feet) area for supplies. The base can house up to 25 people. For transport, they use two small boats called Zodiacs and one all-terrain truck. In 2013, a plan began to make Petrel Base a permanent home for scientists.
First Flight Over Antarctica
Dundee Island holds a special place in history. In 1935, a brave American businessman named Lincoln Ellsworth started an amazing journey from this island. On November 23, 1935, he took off in a plane with his pilot, Herbert Hollick-Kenyon. They made the very first flight across the entire continent of Antarctica. This was a huge achievement for aviation and exploration.
Nearby Places of Interest
There are a few interesting spots near Dundee Island. The Eden Rocks are located off the island's east coast. These rocks are very important for birds. They are known as an Important Bird Area. This means many different kinds of birds live and nest there.
Further east from Eden Rocks is another rock called Puget Rock. This name remembers Captain William D. Puget of the British Royal Navy. The name "Puget" was first used in this area in 1842 by Sir James Clark Ross. The United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) officially named Puget Rock in 1956. This was done to keep Ross's original naming choice in the area.
