The dusky parrot (also called the dusky pionus) is a medium-sized bird. It is a type of parrot that is mostly dark brownish-gray. It belongs to the Pionus group of parrots, which are part of the true parrot family.

What Does the Dusky Parrot Look Like?
The dusky parrot is about 24 cm (9.4 in) long. It has a gray ring around its eyes. This ring can sometimes look white if the bird is kept as a pet. It has some cream-white feathers on its upper neck. Its belly has a touch of pinkish-red. The feathers under its tail are red.
The main flight feathers on its wings (called remiges) are blue. Its tail is also blue, but it has a red color at the very bottom. Overall, the dusky parrot is a dark brownish-gray bird. It can even look black in dim light.
How Do Dusky Parrots Have Babies?
Dusky parrots make their nests inside holes in trees. The female parrot lays white eggs. She usually lays three or four eggs at a time.
The mother bird sits on the eggs for about 26 days to keep them warm. This is called incubation. After the chicks hatch, they stay in the nest for about 70 days. Then, they are ready to leave the nest and fly on their own.
Where Do Dusky Parrots Live?
The dusky parrot lives in humid lowland forests. Its home is in northern South America. You can find them mainly in the Guiana countries and the Amazon Basin.
They usually live east of the Orinoco River in central-eastern Venezuela. Their range goes from near the Caribbean coast about 1,000 km (620 mi) upstream. A small group also lives west of Lake Maracaibo, near the border of Colombia and Venezuela.
You can also find them in northwest Maranhão state in Brazil. They are also in the southeast Amazon Basin, where the Araguaia and Tocantins River meet. South of Guyana, their range reaches central Roraima state in Brazil. They are found east of the lower Branco River.
Can Dusky Parrots Talk?
Dusky parrots are not as well-known for talking as some other parrots. However, they can learn to say between 10 and 20 words.
