Düsseldorf International Airport is a major airport in Germany. It is located about eight kilometers from the city of Düsseldorf. The airport has a special code called the IATA Airport Code, which is DUS. There is another smaller airport nearby, but it mostly handles private jets.

This international airport is very busy. It offers flights to 180 different places across four continents. About 70 airlines use this airport. Every day, there are around 800 takeoffs and landings!

The airport first opened on April 19, 1927. It took two years to build. However, the very first aircraft to land in northern Düsseldorf was a Zeppelin airship back in 1909.

On April 11, 1996, a fire broke out at the airport. It was likely caused by welding work on the roof. Sadly, 17 people died, mostly from breathing in smoke. The main terminal building was badly damaged. It had to be closed for five years while it was rebuilt. The airport fully reopened on July 1, 2001.

A special monorail system called the SkyTrain connects the airport terminal to the main train station. This station serves high-speed trains like the InterCity and ICE. The SkyTrain travels 2.5 kilometers between the terminal and the station. It can go as fast as 50 kilometers per hour. It started running in 2002, replacing an older bus service. You need to pay a small fee to use it.
