More Big Names Join
Many other famous musicians also worked with EMI. These included Prince, Pink Floyd, the Spice Girls, and Coldplay. EMI helped these artists share their music with the world.
In 1992, EMI bought Virgin Records. This record company used to belong to Richard Branson. EMI also tried to buy Universal Records in 1998, but that deal did not happen.
Changes and New Owners
In 2007, a group called Terra Firma took over EMI. This happened after EMI said no to an offer from Warner Music Group. It was a big change for the company.
EMI's New Chapter
In 2012, Universal Music Group bought EMI. However, the European Commission (a group that checks big business deals) told Universal to sell some of EMI's record labels. This was to make sure one company did not become too powerful.
So, some parts of EMI were sold to other companies. Parlophone Records, which was EMI's oldest label, was sold to Warner Music Group. Another label, Mute Records, was bought by BMG. EMI's business that handled music publishing was sold to a group that included Sony/ATV Music Publishing.
