Early Days and Growth
Eagle Island in Idaho was first settled in 1863 by Truman Coe Catlin. He started out farming crops but later switched to dairy farming. He also helped bring water to the area by building a large irrigation ditch. This was a big step for farming in Eagle.
A very important person in Eagle's early development was Thomas Hugh Aiken. He was a surveyor from Canada who helped create the Eagle community in the 1870s. Even with dams like the Arrowrock Dam built in 1915, flooding has often been a problem for people living in Eagle. Efforts are still made to prevent floods.
Eagle Fish Hatchery
The Eagle Fish Hatchery was built in the late 1940s. It first focused on raising trout. In 1991, its main goal changed. It started working to save the Snake River sockeye salmon. This type of salmon was in danger of disappearing.
The hatchery now helps protect these salmon and their different family lines. It also has a special lab called the IDFG Eagle Fish Health Laboratory. This lab studies the health of fish.
