Eagle Grove is a city located in Wright County, Iowa, in the United States. In 2020, about 3,601 people lived there. It is the biggest city in Wright County.

History of Eagle Grove

Eagle Grove was first planned out in 1881. Its name comes from a special grove of oak trees. Early settlers saw eagle nests in these trees. The nests were located above the Boone River bank.

In 1851, a man named N. B. Paine moved to Wright County. He bought land and built a log cabin. This cabin was just west of the oak grove. One eagle nest was very large, over six feet wide. Eagles lived in this nest during the springs and summers of 1855 and 1856. Sadly, in 1857, a trapper shot and killed them. The town was named Eagle Grove to remember these eagles.

A sad event happened on February 2, 1973. A natural gas explosion killed 13 people. It also destroyed two buildings: the Chatterbox Cafe and a hardware store. This was a difficult time for the town.
