History of Woolstock
Woolstock became a township in 1858. Its first Post Office opened in 1868, near the Historic French Church. This church was about 3 miles east of where the town is now.
The town of Woolstock moved in 1881. This happened when the Western Town Lot Company planned new towns along railroad lines. Gilbert Perry named the town "Woolstock." He chose this name because early settlers raised sheep for their wool. Woolstock is the only town in the world with this unique name.
Native American History
The area east of the Boone River was once used by Native Americans. They came here for hunting, fishing, and setting up camps. The Sauk and Meskwaki tribes continued to use the river seasonally. They did this through the early 1900s.
European Settlers
From the late 1800s to the 1940s, many French and German Alsatian immigrants moved to the area. Laurent "Frenchy" and his sister Renie Grandgeorge were some of the last to arrive. Most of these immigrants or their family members are buried at the Historic French Church Cemetery, which started in 1896. Woolstock is a "Sister City" with Ban de la Roche. This is a group of seven mountain villages in Alsace, France.
Famous People from Woolstock
The most famous person from Woolstock was actor George Reeves. He was known for playing Superman/Clark Kent in the 1950s TV show Adventures of Superman. George Reeves was also a veteran and a humanitarian.
He acted in over fifty movies and serials. These included small parts in famous films like Gone with the Wind and From Here to Eternity. George Reeves was born George Keefer Brewer in Woolstock on January 5, 1914. His parents were Donald and Helen (Lescher) Brewer.

Twin Cities Connection
Woolstock has a special connection with the French Alsatian area called Ban de la Roche. Many people from Ban de la Roche settled in Woolstock a long time ago. Ban de la Roche is made up of several French towns, including Bellefosse, Belmont, Fouday, Neuviller-la-Roche, Rothau, Solbach, Wildersbach, and Waldersbach. Waldersbach was the adult home of Jean-Frederic Oberlin, who is the namesake for Oberlin College.
