About Earl Klugh
Earl Klugh started learning to play the piano when he was six years old. When he turned ten, he switched to the guitar. At age 13, he was really inspired by guitarist Chet Atkins, who he saw on TV. Earl later played with Chet Atkins on some of Chet's albums and TV shows. Chet Atkins also played on Earl's album Magic In Your Eyes.
Earl was also influenced by other famous musicians like Bob James, Ray Parker Jr, Wes Montgomery, and Laurindo Almeida. His music mixes different styles like jazz, pop, and rhythm and blues. This creates a unique and sweet sound that is all his own.
Early Career and Awards
Earl Klugh made his first recording when he was just 15 years old. This was on an album called Suite 16 by Yusef Lateef. He also played on George Benson's White Rabbit album. Two years later, in 1973, Earl joined George Benson's touring band.
In 1981, Earl Klugh and Bob James won a Grammy Award for their album One on One. They won for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. Since then, Earl has received 12 more Grammy nominations. He has sold millions of records and CDs. He still travels and performs around the world today.
In 1977, a Japanese jazz magazine called Swing Journal gave Earl Klugh an award. It was for "Best Recording Award For Performance and Sound" for his album Finger Paintings.
Music and Performances
Earl Klugh has recorded more than 30 albums. Out of these, 23 albums reached the Top Ten on Billboard's Jazz Album chart. Five of his albums even reached the number one spot! In 2008, his album The Spice of Life earned him his 12th Grammy nomination.
Every spring, Earl Klugh hosts a special event called "Weekend of Jazz." This event brings together many famous jazz musicians. It takes place at the Broadmoor Hotel & Resort in Colorado Springs. Some of the great artists who have performed there include Ramsey Lewis, Patti Austin, Chuck Mangione, Bob James, Joe Sample, Chris Botti, Roberta Flack, and Arturo Sandoval. In November 2010, Earl also brought the "Weekend of Jazz" event to Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina.
