A Look Back in Time
East Cannington used to be a very different place! It was mostly a quiet, semi-rural area with lots of farms. Only the land close to the railway line had houses.
In 1959, East Cannington was officially named a postal district. Before the 1990s, many farms and places where horses were kept (called agistment properties) filled the area.
However, developers saw its potential, and now most of that land has been turned into suburban housing.
Did you know East Cannington once had a jam factory? It was located near where the old Cannington Train Station used to be. There was also a company that made clothes on Lacey Street.
You can still see some of the old shops that were part of the early retail trade. The East Cannington General Store, made of weatherboard, is opposite the old Cannington Railway Station site.
Where is East Cannington?
East Cannington is bordered by the Armadale railway line to the southwest. To the northwest, you'll find Thomas and Gibbs Streets. Welshpool Road is to the north, and Lacey Street is to the southeast.
This suburb is on the eastern edge of the developed areas in the City of Canning. Beyond it, there are only semi-rural parts of Kenwick and Wattle Grove before you reach the Darling Scarp, which is a big hill range.

East Cannington is mainly a place where people live. It used to have a small local shopping centre on Gerard Street, but that's now closed and houses are being built there.
For bigger shops and services, people usually go to the large Westfield Carousel shopping centre nearby in Cannington.
The suburb has a primary school on Gibbs Street, and Saint Francis Catholic Primary School is on Renou Street. Sevenoaks Senior College, a high school, is also close by.
The northern part of the suburb borders the industrial area of Welshpool, where many businesses are located.
There's a big park along the Welshpool Road border. It has a special nature reserve with plants native to the area and a scout hall for scout groups. You can also find a few other small parks around the suburb for fun and recreation.
