Cannington is a lively suburb located in the southern part of Perth, Western Australia. It's part of the City of Canning, which is like its local council area.

Discovering Cannington's Past

Cannington got its name from the Canning River. This river forms part of the suburb's southwestern edge. The area was first divided into smaller blocks of land in 1882. A railway station was built in the 1890s. It was located across from Station Street, in what is now East Cannington.

The Story of Waverley

For many years, the areas of Cannington, East Cannington, and Beckenham were also known as "Waverley." Lots of buildings and businesses used the name Waverley. Examples include the Waverley Hotel and the Waverley Drive-In Cinema.

The name "Waverley" came from Cecil Gibbs. He first used it when naming the Waverley Hotel. This hotel was a famous landmark for many years. Between 1860 and 1883, William Lacey Gibbs slowly bought most of the land that is now Cannington. His meat processing area was near where the Myer Department Store is today, at Westfield. His brother built the 'Cecil/Waverley' Hotel. It was at the corner of Cecil Road and Albany Highway. The hotel changed a lot over time. It was recently taken down to make the Albany Highway wider.
