Lynwood is a small suburb located in the southeastern part of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia. It is part of the City of Canning, which is its local government area.

Discovering Lynwood's Past

Lynwood has an interesting history that dates back to the early days of settlement in Western Australia.

Who First Settled Lynwood?

The area where Lynwood now stands was first settled by Henry Willett. He was granted a large piece of land near the Canning River in June 1832. This land also included the area that is now Parkwood.

How Did Lynwood Get Its Name?

In November 1964, the local council, then called the Shire of Canning, suggested names for new suburbs. They thought about "Burtsdale" for Willetton and "Willetton" for the Lynwood/Parkwood area. "Burtsdale" was meant to honor Septimus Burt, who bought the land in 1882.

However, in August 1965, developers working in the Lynwood area wanted to call it "Clovercrest Estate." Eventually, everyone agreed on the name "Lynwood." The name "Willetton" was then used for a different area to the west. Lynwood officially became a suburb in December 1965.

When Did Parkwood Become Separate?

For many years, Parkwood was considered part of Lynwood. It wasn't until 1993 that Parkwood became its own separate suburb.

New Beginnings: Migrants in the 1960s

In the 1960s and 1970s, many new migrants from the United Kingdom moved to Perth. They were looking for better job opportunities. A British company called Realty Development Corporation (RDC) built many homes in Lynwood and Parkwood. They offered "home and land packages" to these new English families as they arrived.

Exploring Lynwood's Location

Lynwood is located about 13.3 kilometers (8.3 miles) southeast of the Perth city center.

What Are Lynwood's Borders?

The suburb is surrounded by several main roads. High Road forms its southern and southwestern border. Nicholson Road is to the east, and Metcalfe Road is to the north and northwest. The Canning River is only about 300 meters (980 feet) northeast of Lynwood.

Green Spaces in Lynwood

A lovely green area called Bannister Creek Park runs through the southern part of Lynwood. It provides a natural space for residents to enjoy.

What Can You Find in Lynwood?

Lynwood is mainly a residential area, meaning it's where people live. It has many parks connected by Bannister Creek.

Local Shops and Services

The suburb has a neighborhood shopping center. Here, you can find a supermarket, a post office, and various food places. There is also a community hall for local events.

Schools in the Area

Lynwood has a primary school that was finished in 2010. This school also serves children from the nearby suburb of Ferndale. Lynwood Senior High School, built in 1975, is located in the neighboring suburb of Parkwood.

Nearby Shopping and Fun

For bigger shopping trips, the Riverton Forum and Westfield Carousel shopping centers are less than 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) away. The Riverton Leisureplex is also nearby. This is a large facility with sports, fitness, and recreation options. It opened in 2001 and is run by the City of Canning. It also has the council's biggest library.

A shopping center in Parkwood was built in 1979. However, it was recently taken down because not many people were using it. Now, only a few convenience stores and a small medical clinic remain there. The Lynwood Arms Hotel, a local pub built in the early 1970s, was demolished in 2014. New medium-density housing was built in its place.

Unique 1970s Architecture

In the late 2010s, Lynwood was one of the few suburbs where you could still see many original 1970s houses. These homes often had long, narrow windows, dark brown colors, and many arches. In other areas, older houses have been replaced quickly, changing the look of the streets.
