Post Office and Town Name Confusion
A post office opened in East Germantown in 1846. It used the name East Germantown for many years. However, in 1917, during World War I, its name officially changed to "Pershing." This was done to honor General Pershing, a famous American military leader.
The town board also wanted to change the town's name to Pershing. But some people worried that if the town name changed, their property deeds (documents showing who owns land) would no longer be valid. Because of this concern, the town's name stayed East Germantown after a vote.
Even though the post office became "Pershing," the railroad kept calling the stop "East Germantown." This was because there was already another place called Pershing in Fulton County, Indiana.
