About the Eastern Long-Fingered Bat
This bat was first described in 1840 by a Dutch scientist named Coenraad Jacob Temminck. He gave it the scientific name Vespertilio macrodactylus. The very first bat of this type studied was found in Japan.
For a while, some scientists thought this bat was just a type of the long-fingered bat. But now, most experts agree it is its own unique species. There are three slightly different groups, called subspecies, within the eastern long-fingered bat family:
- M. m. continentalis
- M. m. insularis
- M. m. macrodactylus
Life and Habits of the Bat
Eastern long-fingered bats are very social animals. This means they like to live together in large groups. Both male and female bats share their roosts, which are their resting places. These groups, called colonies, can have hundreds of bats! Sometimes, other types of bats even join their colonies.
Reproduction and Life Cycle
These bats have a special breeding season in the fall. However, the female bats do not become pregnant right away. They have something called delayed fertilization. This means the pregnancy only starts in the spring. Females usually give birth to one baby bat in June or July. Young female bats can start having their own babies when they are almost two years old. They can continue to have babies until they are about fifteen years old.
What Do They Eat?
Eastern long-fingered bats are insectivores. This means they eat only insects. They catch their food in two main ways. They can catch insects while flying, which is called hawking. Or, they can pick insects right off the surface of water, which is called gleaning.
Where These Bats Live
You can find the eastern long-fingered bat in the Russian Far East and other parts of East Asia. This includes countries like China, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, and Russia. These bats really like to live near water, especially rivers. This is because they hunt for their food over the water. During the day, they find shelter in rock crevices, human-made buildings, and caves.
