Coenraad Jacob Temminck (born March 31, 1778 – died January 30, 1858) was a famous Dutch zoologist and museum director. He was known for his important work studying animals, especially birds.

His Life and Work

Coenraad Jacob Temminck was born in Amsterdam, in what was then the Dutch Republic, on March 31, 1778. His father, Jacob Temminck, was a treasurer for the Dutch East India Company. This meant his father knew many travelers and collectors. From his father, Coenraad inherited a very large collection of bird specimens. His father was also a good friend of Francois Levaillant, another famous naturalist, who helped guide Coenraad in his studies.

Important Books on Birds

Temminck wrote a very important book called Manuel d'ornithologie (which means "Handbook of Ornithology"). This book, published in 1815, was the main guide for studying European birds for many years. He also wrote other books, including Histoire naturelle générale des Pigeons et des Gallinacées (about pigeons and chickens) and Nouveau Recueil de Planches coloriées d'Oiseaux (a new collection of colored bird plates). He even helped write parts about mammals for a book called Fauna japonica, which described animals from Japan.

Leading a Museum

From 1820 until his death, Temminck was the very first director of the National Museum of Natural History in Leiden, Netherlands. This was a very important role in the world of science. Because of his great work, he was chosen to be a member of important scientific groups, like the American Philosophical Society in 1824 and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1831. In 1836, he became a member of the Royal Institute, which later became the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Discoveries and Descriptions

Temminck worked with another scientist named Heinrich Kuhl. Together, they described many types of parrots, including the rosella Platycercus icterotis.

He also described a type of junglefowl (a wild chicken) in 1807. This bird had no tail. Later, in 1813, Temminck described another junglefowl, Gallus giganteus. He thought this bird was one of six wild types that led to all domestic chickens we have today. However, another famous naturalist, Charles Darwin, later showed that all domestic chickens likely came from just one wild type.
