The Echo Lake Country Club is a private club located in Westfield, New Jersey. It was started in 1899. This club is famous for its beautiful 18-hole golf course. The course was designed by a well-known golf course architect named Donald Ross in 1913. It's a place where members can enjoy golf and other fun activities.

History of the Club

The club began its journey in 1899. It was first known as the Cranford Golf Club. Its first golf course had 9 holes and was located in Cranford, New Jersey. A golf course designer named Willie Dunn created this first course.

Early Days in Cranford

The Cranford Golf Club was on Lincoln Avenue. Important local business people, like Thomas Sperry and William Miller Sperry, helped lead the club. The land where the club first stood had a long history. People say that lumber from this land was used to build the famous ship, the USS Constitution, way back in the 1700s.

The club's original grounds also had a very special tree. It was the biggest sour gum tree ever recorded in the Northeastern United States. People called it the Cranford Pepperidge Tree or "Old Peppy."

Talented Young Athletes

Some young athletes from the Cranford club became very famous. Max Marston won a big golf championship called the National Amateur Golf Association Championship. Another talented player, Dean Mathey, won the National Clay Court Tennis Doubles Championship twice.

Moving to Westfield

In 1912, the Cranford Golf Club bought a new piece of land. This land was the Harper Farm in Westfield, New Jersey. They hired Donald Ross to design a brand new golf course there. This new course was finished in 1913. The club's main building, called the clubhouse, was built on a high spot. It had a great view overlooking Echo Lake.

Becoming Echo Lake Country Club

In 1921, the Cranford Golf Club joined with another club. This other club was the Westfield Golf Club. They decided to call their new combined club the Echo Lake Country Club. This name was chosen for two reasons. First, the club was located near Echo Lake, which is part of the Rahway River Parkway. Second, the name showed that the club offered many different activities, not just golf.
