Edward Jerome Tarver (born July 22, 1959 – died February 9, 2024) was an American lawyer. He held important roles in government. One of his main jobs was being the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia. This means he was the top lawyer for the U.S. government in that area. He also served as a Georgia State Senator, representing people in his state. Later, he ran for the United States Senate in 2020.

Early Life and School

Edward Tarver went to Augusta College. He finished his studies there in 1981. After college, he joined the United States Army. He worked as an officer in the field artillery. Later, he went to the University of Georgia School of Law. He graduated from law school in 1991.

Public Service Career

After law school, Tarver worked for a federal judge. His name was Dudley H. Bowen Jr. This job is called a law clerk.

Serving in the Georgia State Senate

In 2005, Tarver became a Georgia State Senator. He represented the 22nd district. This role meant he helped make laws for the state of Georgia.

United States Attorney

In December 2009, Tarver became the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia. This was a very important job. He was the first African American to hold this position in that district. He worked to uphold federal laws in the area. He served in this role until 2017.
