Edam-Volendam is a municipality in the Netherlands. It is located in the northwest part of the country. This area is in the province of North Holland.

The municipality mainly includes two towns: Edam and Volendam. It sits on the western side of the Markermeer lake. This area is just north of another region called Waterland. In 2021, about 36,268 people lived here.

In 2016, another municipality called Zeevang joined with Edam-Volendam. This made the municipality bigger.

Historical Figures

  • Geertje Dircx (born around 1610–1615 in Edam – died around 1656) was a close friend of the famous painter Rembrandt van Rijn.
  • Boudewijn Hendricksz (died 1626) was a Dutch corsair (a type of privateer or sailor who attacked enemy ships). He later became an Admiral. He was also the mayor of Edam.
  • Trijntje Keever (1616–1633) was known as the tallest female person ever recorded. She was 2.54 metres (8 ft 4 in) tall when she passed away.
  • Maria Leer (1788 in Edam – 1866) was a Dutch religious figure.

  • Jan Keizer (born 1949 in Volendam) is a Dutch singer and composer. He was part of the popular pop band BZN.
  • Geraldine Kemper (born 1990 in Volendam) is a well-known Dutch TV presenter.
  • Bernadette (born Bernadette Kraakman, 1959 in Volendam) is a Dutch singer. She sang in the 1983 Eurovision Song Contest.
