Wilhelmus Maria "Wim" Jonk was born on October 12, 1966. He is a Dutch football manager and a former player. He played as a central midfielder. Today, he works as the technical manager for the Eerste Divisie club Volendam.
During his playing career, Wim Jonk won many awards with Dutch clubs like Ajax and PSV. He also played for Inter Milan in Italy, where he won the UEFA Cup in 1994. Later, he played in the Premier League for Sheffield Wednesday in England.
Wim Jonk also played for the Dutch national team. He played 49 games between 1992 and 1999. He represented his country in major tournaments like UEFA Euro 1992 and the FIFA World Cups in 1994 and 1998. In the 1998 World Cup, his team finished fourth.

Playing Career: From Volendam to Europe
Wim Jonk was born in Volendam, a town in the Netherlands. He started playing football for an amateur club called RKAV Volendam. In 1986, he joined his hometown club, Volendam.
Early Success at Volendam
Wim Jonk was known for scoring many goals from his midfield position. He helped his club get promoted to the Eredivisie in 1987. The Eredivisie is the highest football league in the Netherlands.
Joining Ajax and Winning Trophies
In 1988, Ajax, a very famous Dutch club, signed Wim Jonk. He quickly fit into the team and scored six goals in his first season. He helped Ajax reach the 1992 UEFA Cup Final. In that final, he scored a goal that helped Ajax beat Torino and win the trophy.
Moving to Inter Milan
In 1993, Wim Jonk moved to Italy to play for Inter Milan. He signed a three-year contract. His fellow Dutch player, Dennis Bergkamp, also joined Inter Milan from Ajax at the same time. Wim Jonk played 54 games for Inter Milan over two seasons and scored eight goals. He scored another goal in a UEFA Cup Final, helping Inter Milan win the 1994 final.
Return to the Netherlands with PSV
After Dennis Bergkamp left Inter Milan in 1995, Wim Jonk felt he might not get to play as much. Since he was almost 30 years old, he decided to go back to the Netherlands. He signed with PSV, another big Dutch club.
Playing in the Premier League
For the 1998–99 season, Wim Jonk moved to England to play for Sheffield Wednesday. He was a regular player for the team, which was trying to avoid being moved down to a lower league. He was sometimes injured, which meant he missed games. He barely played in his last season, 2000–01, because of a groin injury. Even so, he said he wanted to keep playing football.
Playing for the Netherlands
Wim Jonk played for the Dutch national team many times. His first game was on May 27, 1992. He came on as a substitute in a friendly match against Austria, which the Netherlands won 3–2.
UEFA Euro 1992 and World Cup Appearances
In 1992, he was chosen to play in UEFA Euro 1992. He played in one game against Scotland, which the Netherlands won 1–0.
Wim Jonk was also part of the Dutch team for the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States. He scored an important goal in a 2–1 win against Saudi Arabia. He also scored a long-range goal in a win against the Republic of Ireland in the knockout stage.
He was selected again for the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France. He played in five out of seven games, helping the team finish in fourth place. After the 1998 World Cup, he played only one more game for the Netherlands in 1999. He finished his international career having played 49 games and scored 11 goals.
Managerial Career
After he stopped playing football, Wim Jonk became a football expert on TV. Later, he returned to his first club, Volendam. He worked as a board member for technical affairs. He also helped train players and assisted the first and second teams.
Working at Ajax Academy
From 2008 to 2015, Wim Jonk worked for Ajax. He was involved in the club's youth academy. He left the club in 2015 due to different ideas about how the club should be run.
Cruyff Football Institute
Wim Jonk now works with Jordi Cruyff at an international football institute called Cruyff Football. This institute helps develop football based on the ideas of the famous football legend, Johan Cruyff.
Managing Volendam
On April 13, 2019, Wim Jonk became the new manager of Volendam. Three years later, he led the team to get promoted to the top league for the first time in 13 years. This was a big achievement for the club. On June 16, 2023, he changed roles at the club. He became the "technical manager of professional football," and his assistant coach, Matthias Kohler, took over as head coach.
Personal Life
Wim Jonk is married to Gina, and they have two children. When he played for Sheffield Wednesday, his family lived in Dore, South Yorkshire in England. Wim Jonk is a Catholic. He was known for making the sign of the cross during games, which was not common among his Dutch teammates.
