Eddie Peng Yu-Yan (Chinese: 彭于晏; pinyin: Péng Yúyàn; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Phêⁿ Û-àn) is a famous actor, singer, and model from Taiwan. He was born on March 24, 1982. He is well-known for his roles in many popular movies. Some of his most famous films include Hear Me (2009), Unbeatable (2013), and Operation Mekong (2016). In 2024, Eddie Peng starred in the movie Black Dog. This film was shown at the 77th Cannes Film Festival and won a special award called Un Certain Regard.

Early Life and School
Eddie Peng was born in Penghu, Taiwan. When he was thirteen years old, he moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He finished high school at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School in 2000. After that, he started studying economics at the University of British Columbia. However, he later left college to begin his acting career.
Eddie Peng's Acting Journey
Starting Out: 2002–2008
Eddie Peng began his acting career during a summer vacation in Taiwan. Director Yang Daqing chose him for the TV show Tomorrow in 2002. This show was based on a Japanese comic book. Eddie became popular with teenage fans because of this romantic comedy. In 2003, he got his first main role in the Taiwanese drama Scent of Love.
In 2005, he acted in the show When Dolphin Met Cat. He played a young man with autism. To get ready for the role, Eddie spent a month learning how to work with dolphins. He also starred in popular Chinese TV shows like Chinese Paladin and The Young Warriors. These shows made him even more recognized in mainland China.
Eddie then made his first movie, Exit No.6, in 2006. This film helped many directors notice him. In 2007, he was nominated for Best New Actor at the 44th Golden Horse Film Festival and Awards for his role in My DNA Says I Love You.
Challenges and Breakthrough: 2009–2013
Around 2009, Eddie Peng had some problems with his old manager. This was a difficult time for his career. But during this period, he starred in the movie Hear Me. In this film, he played a delivery boy who falls in love with a deaf girl and uses sign language to talk to her. The movie was very successful in Taiwan.
After solving his contract issues in 2010, he released his first music album called It Has To Be You. The same year, he played a boxer in the movie Close to You. He trained for three months to prepare for this role.
Eddie's career really took off in 2011 with the teen film Jump Ashin!. He trained for eight months to play an athlete in this movie. The film was a big hit and received good reviews. Eddie was nominated for Best Actor at the 48th Golden Horse Film Festival. This movie was a turning point for him.
After that, he appeared in different types of movies. He was in romance films like Love You You and Love. He also acted in the police thriller Cold War and kungfu comedies Tai Chi 0 and Tai Chi Hero. This showed how good he was at playing different characters.
In 2013, Eddie starred in the action film Unbeatable. He played a mixed martial arts fighter and practiced boxing for four hours every day. Unbeatable was very popular in Hong Kong and got great reviews. Eddie was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for this role. He also starred in the romantic comedy A Wedding Invitation, which was a big success in China.
Continued Success: 2014–Present
In 2014, Eddie Peng played the famous Kung-Fu master Wong Fei-hung in the movie Rise of the Legend. He trained for 10 hours a day to learn martial arts for this part. He was nominated for Best Actor at the 34th Hong Kong Film Award. He also starred in the historical drama Sound of the Desert and the coming-of-age film Fleet of Time. Both of these were very popular.
In 2015, Eddie played a professional cyclist in the sports film To the Fore. He even got qualifications for competitive racing while filming! This movie was chosen to represent Hong Kong at the Academy Awards. Eddie also became the first Chinese Goodwill Ambassador for the Tour de France in 2015.
Eddie had another big success in 2016 with the film Operation Mekong. He played a brave undercover agent. This movie was highly praised and became the highest-grossing Chinese police film at the time. He also appeared in other films like Cold War 2 and The Great Wall.
In 2017, Eddie co-starred in Duckweed, which was a surprise hit. He then played a complex character in the war film Our Time Will Come. Eddie also played the main character, Sun Wukong, in the fantasy movie Wu Kong. This film made over $100 million at the box office.
In 2018, Eddie starred in the wuxia film Hidden Man. More recently, in 2020, he starred in The Rescue, a thrilling movie about emergency rescue workers.
Personal Life
Eddie Peng has had relationships that were sometimes affected by his career. In 2015, he dated Taiwanese actress Lyla Lin. While filming Black Dog, Eddie became very close to his dog co-star, Xin, and decided to adopt him.
