Professional Career

Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts chose James in the first round of the 1999 NFL draft. He was the fourth player picked overall. James signed a big contract for seven years. Some people thought the Colts made a mistake by picking him.

But James quickly proved them wrong. He was very successful right away. He was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 1999. James also led the NFL in rushing yards in his first two seasons. He was the last player to win the rushing title as a rookie until Ezekiel Elliott. In 2001, he had a serious injury to his knee.

James ran for over 1,500 yards in both the 2004 and 2005 seasons.

When James left the Colts in 2006, he was their all-time leading rusher with 9,226 yards. The Colts won the Super Bowl XLI the next season. Even though James was not on the team then, the Colts' owner, Jim Irsay, still sent him a Super Bowl ring.

On September 23, 2012, James was honored by the Colts. He was added to the Indianapolis Colts Ring of Honor.

Arizona Cardinals

James joined the Arizona Cardinals in March 2006. He signed a four-year contract. By 2007, James was the active NFL leader in career rushing yards. This means he had more rushing yards than any other player still playing.

In 2008, James had a period where he didn't carry the ball much. The coach used him mostly to help protect the quarterback. But in Week 17, he ran for 100 yards against the Seattle Seahawks. James helped the Cardinals reach Super Bowl XLIII in 2009. They lost a close game to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In April 2009, a sad event happened in James's life. The mother of four of his children passed away after an illness. After this, he asked to be released from the team, and the Cardinals agreed.

Seattle Seahawks

After taking time to be with his children, James signed with the Seattle Seahawks in August 2009. He missed the team's training camp. He played in only seven games for the Seahawks. He ran for 125 yards on 46 carries. On November 3, 2009, Seattle released him from the team.

On July 26, 2011, Edgerrin James announced he was retiring from professional football. He finished his career with 12,246 rushing yards and 80 rushing touchdowns.
