Playing for the Indianapolis Colts
The Indianapolis Colts chose James as the fourth overall pick in the 1999 NFL draft. Some people thought the Colts made a mistake by picking him over Ricky Williams. However, James quickly proved them wrong.
He was an instant success and was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 1999. James led the NFL in rushing yards in his first two seasons. He was the last NFL player to win the rushing title as a rookie until Ezekiel Elliott. In 2001, he had a serious knee injury, tearing his ACL.
James had over 1,500 rushing yards in both the 2004 and 2005 seasons. He left Indianapolis as the team's all-time leading rusher with 9,226 yards. After he left in 2006, the Colts won Super Bowl XLI the next season. Even though he was not on the team then, the Colts' owner, Jim Irsay, still sent him a Super Bowl ring.
On September 23, 2012, James was added to the Indianapolis Colts Ring of Honor. This special honor happened during a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Playing for the Arizona Cardinals
James signed a four-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals on March 23, 2006. He became the active leader in career rushing yards in 2007. He held this title until his last game in November 2009.
In 2008, James had a period where he carried the ball very few times. The coach, Ken Whisenhunt, used him mainly to protect the quarterback. In the last game of the 2008 season, James rushed for 100 yards. He later said he would not return to Arizona after the 2009 NFL playoffs.
In the Cardinals' first playoff game since 1998, James played well against the Atlanta Falcons. He rushed for 57 yards and a touchdown in the next playoff game, helping the Cardinals beat the Carolina Panthers. James rushed for 73 yards in the Cardinals' win over the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship. In Super Bowl XLIII, James rushed for 33 yards, but the Cardinals lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In April 2009, the mother of his children passed away. After this, James asked to be released from the team, and the Cardinals agreed.
Playing for the Seattle Seahawks
After taking time to be with his four children, James signed a one-year contract with the Seattle Seahawks on August 24, 2009. He missed the team's training camp. The team released another running back, T. J. Duckett, to make room for James. However, James played in only seven games and rushed for only 125 yards. On November 3, 2009, Seattle released him from the team.
On July 26, 2011, James announced he was retiring from professional football. He finished his career with 12,246 rushing yards and 80 rushing touchdowns.
