Early Life and Dreams
Edita Abdieski grew up in Bern, Switzerland. She is the oldest of four children. Her father was from Macedonia and her mother was from Montenegro. Sadly, her father passed away when she was eight years old.
Edita loved music from a young age. When she was eleven, she joined her first school band. By the time she was thirteen, she was already writing her own songs. After finishing school, she trained to be an office worker. However, her real dream was to become a professional singer.
To follow her dream, Edita enrolled at the Swiss Musical Academy in Bern. Her mother was not sure about this choice, so Edita moved into a shared apartment in 2002. She worked several part-time jobs to pay for her music studies.
Edita's Music Journey
Starting Her Career (2002-2009)
In 2002, Edita got a chance to work on a special album. A producer asked her and a school friend, Vanessa Tancredi, to sing songs in Swiss German dialect. Even though it was a new style for her, Edita agreed. For the next two years, they worked on their debut album as Vanessædita.
During this time, Edita also sang backup for the Swiss pop-rock band Lunik. She also worked with musician Santiago Cortés. She sang and helped write his song "Don't Leave Me," which became a top 40 hit in Switzerland in 2005.
In 2005, Edita also played the main role of Kimberly in a musical called Dance Me! – The Streetdance Musical. An album from the musical was released in 2006.
In March 2006, the Vanessædita album, called Z'Debü (meaning "The Debut"), was released. Their first song, "Wenn ig nume wüsst," reached the top 50. However, the album itself did not sell very well. In 2007, Edita and Vanessa decided to go their separate ways. Edita later said that singing in dialect was "not [her] thing."
Winning X Factor (2010)
In 2010, Edita decided to audition for the first season of X Factor in Germany. She sang "Tell Me 'Bout It" by Joss Stone. She was coached by Till Brönner. Edita impressed the judges and the audience throughout the show.
On November 9, 2010, Edita Abdieski was announced as the winner of X Factor! This win earned her a record deal with Sony Music.
