Eduardo Alonso Colmenares (born October 13, 1820 – died March 31, 1888) was a Spanish lawyer, judge, and politician. He held important roles in the Spanish government. He was the Minister of Justice when Amadeo I was king. Later, he became the Minister of Public Works and the Economy during the time of the First Spanish Republic.

Early Life and Career

Eduardo Alonso Colmenares was born in Corella, Spain, on October 13, 1820. He studied law in Madrid and became a lawyer. He worked in Madrid and Pamplona. Later, he became a judge and a public prosecutor. He served in courts in Seville, Barcelona, and Granada.

In 1859, he moved to the Spanish colonies in the Caribbean. He worked as a judge in Havana, Cuba, and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He also held a high financial position in Cuba.

A Return to Politics

When the Revolution of 1868 happened in Spain, Eduardo Alonso Colmenares returned home. He became very active in politics. In 1871, he was chosen to represent Navarre Province in the Spanish Parliament. He was chosen again in 1872 for Logroño (province).

Later, in 1877, he became a life senator. This meant he could serve in the Senate for the rest of his life.

Serving as Minister of Justice

Eduardo Alonso Colmenares was the Minister of Justice several times. His first term was from October 5, 1871, to May 26, 1872. He served in the governments led by Jose Malcampo and Monge and Práxedes Mateo Sagasta. He returned to this role again from September 3 to December 31, 1874, under the leadership of Sagasta.

He passed away on March 31, 1888.
