Occupation Filmmaker

Eduardo Jimeno Correas (born February 22, 1870, in Zaragoza – died October 30, 1947, in Madrid) was an important Spanish filmmaker and producer. He is considered one of the very first people to make movies in Spain.

Early Film Adventures

In 1896, Eduardo Jimeno and his father, Eduardo Jimeno Peromarta, bought a special camera. It was a Lumière camera, bought in Lyon, France. This camera was very new and exciting at the time.

Filming the Fiestas

Eduardo Jimeno used his new camera to film the famous Fiestas del Pilar in Zaragoza that same year. He set up his camera on a balcony. This balcony was near the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar. He recorded "natural scenes" of the events. These recordings were made on October 11 and 19.

First Spanish Films

From his recordings, Eduardo Jimeno created two short documentary films. These films were called Salida de la misa de doce de la Iglesia del Pilar de Zaragoza and Saludos. The film Salida de la misa de doce de la Iglesia del Pilar de Zaragoza is very important. Many people believe it was the first Spanish film. It was directed and produced by a Spaniard in the Iberian Peninsula. Before this, a Lumière operator named Francis Doublier had filmed a bull fight in Spain. But Jimeno's film was the first by a Spanish person.

Details of the Films

The film tape for Salida de la misa de doce de la Iglesia del Pilar de Zaragoza was about 12.4 meters long. It had 651 individual pictures, called stills. The film itself lasted for less than a minute.

Both short films, Salida de la misa de doce de la Iglesia del Pilar de Zaragoza and Saludos, were carefully fixed up in 1994. Later, in 2004, they were sold at an auction. Someone connected to the Lumière Institute bought them for 129,000 euros. This shows how valuable these early films are.
