Eduardo Ortega y Gasset (born 1882, died 1965) was an important Spanish politician, a journalist, and a lawyer. He played a big role in Spain's history during a time of great change.

About Eduardo Ortega y Gasset

Eduardo Ortega y Gasset was born in Madrid, Spain, on April 11, 1882. He was the older brother of a famous thinker named José Ortega y Gasset.

Early Political Career

Eduardo became a member of the Spanish Parliament, called the Congress of Deputies, in 1910. He represented the area of Coín in Málaga. He was part of the Liberal group. He was re-elected many times, serving in Parliament until 1923.

In 1922, he joined a group called Freemasonry.

Time in Exile

During the time when Spain was ruled by a dictator named Primo de Rivera, Eduardo Ortega y Gasset went to live in Paris. There, he became good friends with another important Spanish writer, Miguel de Unamuno. They worked together on a magazine called España con Honra.

In 1929, he helped start a new political group called the Radical Socialist Republican Party (PRRS).

Role in the Second Republic

Eduardo Ortega y Gasset was one of the people who signed the Pact of San Sebastián in 1930. This agreement helped bring about the Second Spanish Republic.

Soon after the Republic was declared in April 1931, he was made the Civil Governor of Madrid. This was a very important job, like being in charge of the city's government. He served in this role until June 1931.

Later in 1931, he ran for election to the group that would write Spain's new constitution. He was elected from three different areas and chose to represent Ciudad Real.

In 1932, he left his political party because he often disagreed with its rules. He then helped form a new group called Izquierda Radical Socialista (Radical Socialist Left).

Later Life and Exile

Eduardo Ortega y Gasset was appointed Attorney General of the Republic in December 1936. This meant he was the chief lawyer for the government.

After the Spanish Civil War ended, he went to live in Venezuela. He passed away in Caracas on February 25, 1965.
