Edward Alfred Martin Sr. (June 18, 1925 – February 25, 2002) was an important American sports figure. He was a successful college basketball coach for many years. Before coaching, he was also a professional Negro league baseball player. Martin is remembered for his dedication to sports and education.
Early Life and Baseball Career
Edward Martin was born on June 18, 1925, in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He went to William Allen High School in his hometown. After high school, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
After his military service, Martin attended North Carolina A&T State University. There, he was a star athlete in both baseball and basketball. He graduated from North Carolina A&T in 1951. Later, he earned a Master's Degree from Temple University.
In 1951 and 1952, Martin played professional baseball. He was a pitcher for the Philadelphia Stars. This team was part of the Negro leagues.
Coaching Successes
After his time playing baseball, Edward Martin began his long coaching career. He started as a high school basketball coach. He coached at the Avery Normal Institute in Charleston, South Carolina. While there, his teams won two state championships.
From 1955 to 1968, Martin coached basketball at South Carolina State University. He then moved to Tennessee State University in 1968. He coached at Tennessee State until 1986. Over more than 30 years coaching college teams, he achieved over 500 wins. His teams also made many appearances in postseason tournaments.
Later Years and Legacy
In his later years, Edward Martin continued to be involved in sports and education. He worked as an assistant basketball coach at Vanderbilt University. He was also an associate professor at Vanderbilt's Peabody College. This showed his commitment to both sports and teaching.
Martin also served as a scout for the Minnesota Timberwolves, a professional basketball team. His contributions to sports were widely recognized. In 1994, he was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. He also received honors from the athletic halls of fame at several universities. These included North Carolina A&T State University, South Carolina State University, Tennessee State University, and Vanderbilt University.
Edward Martin passed away on February 25, 2002, in Nashville, Tennessee. He was 76 years old. He left behind a legacy as a respected coach, player, and educator.
