Sir Edward Vere Levinge KCIE CSI (1867–1954) was an important British administrator. He worked in the Indian Civil Service. This service helped run British India, which was a large part of the British Empire. Sir Edward even served as the acting leader, called Lieutenant-Governor, of a province named Bihar and Orissa. This was for a few months in 1918. He stepped in when the usual Lieutenant-Governor, Edward Albert Gait, was away.

Edward Vere Levinge was born on May 24, 1867. His birthplace was Cuttack in British India. His father, Harry Corbyn Levinge, worked for the government in Bengal. He was in charge of public works. Edward was the second son in his family.
He went to school at Cheltenham College. After that, he studied at Balliol College, Oxford in England. He started his studies there in October 1885.
Working in India's Government
In 1885, Edward Levinge took a special test. This test was to join the Indian Civil Service. He finished his university degree in law in 1888. Soon after, he arrived in Bengal, India, in November 1888.
Climbing the Ranks
His first job was as an assistant magistrate. He also worked as an assistant District collector. These roles involved helping with law and order. They also helped collect taxes. From 1893, he worked in different government departments. In 1896, he became a joint magistrate and deputy collector. By 1898, he was a full magistrate and District Collector. These were important positions in the local government.
Special Awards and Honors
Sir Edward's hard work was recognized. In 1911, he received the award of Companion of the Order of the Star of India (CSI). This was a high honor for service to the British Empire in India. In 1916, he received an even higher award. He was made a Knight Commander, Order of the Indian Empire (KCIE). This meant he could use the title "Sir" before his name.
Family Life and Later Years
Edward Levinge married Alys Adèle Thomas. They got married in London on December 1, 1900. They had one daughter named Vera Alys, who was born in 1911.
Sir Edward Levinge passed away on January 24, 1954. He was 86 years old. He died in Marandellas, which is in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). His wife, Alys, had passed away earlier in 1952.
