Edward Wanshear Wynkoop (June 19, 1836 – September 11, 1891) was an important figure in the early history of Colorado. He helped found the city of Denver. Today, Wynkoop Street in Denver is named after him.

Edward Wynkoop's Early Life and Career

Edward Wanshear Wynkoop was born in Philadelphia on June 19, 1836. He moved west and became the first Sheriff of Arapahoe County in the Kansas Territory. This area is now the northeastern part of Colorado. He started this role on September 21, 1858.

Serving in the Civil War

During the American Civil War, Edward Wynkoop joined the First Colorado Volunteer Cavalry. He served as an officer, reaching the rank of major. By May 1865, he was given the honorary rank of lieutenant colonel. This meant he was recognized for his brave service.

Efforts for Peace with Native Americans

In 1864, Wynkoop was in charge of Fort Lyon, Colorado. He worked hard to create peace with the Cheyenne people. He wanted to avoid conflict and build trust.

However, he was moved to Fort Riley, Kansas, in November 1864. This happened just before the terrible Sand Creek massacre.

Investigating the Sand Creek Massacre

After the Sand Creek massacre, Wynkoop investigated what happened. He looked into the actions of Colonel John Chivington. Wynkoop's investigation showed that Chivington's actions were wrong. This led to Chivington being criticized for the massacre.

Working as an Indian Agent

In 1866, Wynkoop became an Indian agent. His job was to work with the Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes. He tried to help them and protect their rights.

However, he resigned in December 1868. He did this to protest the destruction of Black Kettle's village during the Battle of Washita River. He felt that the government's actions were unjust.

Later Life and Legacy

After his time as an Indian agent, Edward Wynkoop moved to New Mexico. He became the warden of the New Mexico penitentiary. He passed away in Santa Fe on September 11, 1891.

Wynkoop is remembered for his role in founding Denver. He is also known for his efforts to bring peace and justice to Native American tribes.
